Day 2

The weather was stunning and had cleared up from the previous day. Mike had us go through the approach charts for Madison and mark up the key features. Then it was time to fly. Sharon went first again and the flight detail was to do more general handling followed by a couple of approaches into Madison (KMSN). We would then swap over and I would do the same.

Sharon did fine and after a quick comfort break I  took off from Madison and went through my detail. My overriding memory of that day was making a near perfect landing back at Morey to the extent that it was noticed and commented on.  It felt good and as result lunch tasted  good too. Sharon took me to this amazing sandwich restaurant “The Bears Paw” or something like that where we fuelled up. Like anything in flying, these moments of euphoria only last so long and in my case it was until I went back into the simulator. I really felt as if I had never flown a plane before. The truth was I had never flown a sim before but that phrase about sims exposing poor scanning technique had me rattled.

About 5pm, Rich arrived back from his charter and set us our homework for the first day of the trip proper the next day. We agreed who was to be pilot 1 and pilot 2. That sorted the itinerary. Our luggage limit was 20 lbs. we were issued with our WCA flight bags - really nice they are too.

The confirmed Itinerary

We had to prepare our approach plates for the next day and file the flight plans. I was finished by 8 pm went back to the hotel packed my bags for the morning and went out for dinner.

My excitement was tempered by my indifferent performance in the sim and whether my basic skills were up to the mark. I restricted myself to two beers that night and they knocked me out a treat.
